Top Cloud Hosting Hosters Are Amazon and Rackspace
An analysis of the top 500,000 websites conducted by a startup called InfiBase found that 1550 websites were hosted on EC2 followed by 1373 sites hosted by Rackspace. Other hosters covered by the analysis were Joyent (205 sites), Google App Engine (78 sites), and GoGrid (42 sites).
Another interesting fact found in this analysis was that EC2 is growing by 9% per month which would mean that EC2 tripples the number of websites each year. With these numbers EC2 is still a marginal topic at best when it comes to web hosting. Only 0,28% of the top 500.000 websites are hosted on EC2 leaving a lot of room for growth.
Since Amazon does not publicly share customer or revenue stats (all we know is that several 10.000 users use AWS) we can estimate that most users do not use EC2 for webhosting yet. Quote from www.techcrunch.com: "Rather the biggest customers in both number and amount of computing resources consumed are divisions of banks, pharmaceuticals companies and other large corporations who try AWS once for a temporary project, and then get hooked."
